Project CARS has seen several delays over the past few months; in some cases it feels like we’ve been hearing about it forever. But it is not the lengthy and protracted development it first appears. Yes, there has been an 8 month delay, but the open community nature of the title has put it out there far sooner than we would usually hear about any given development. It’s not been about careful PR pacing, more a case of working with the community and developing the title bit by bit. Of course that means there are a lot of said ‘bits’ to bring together, and that turned into even more bugs and code optimisation.

Add to the that the challenge of releasing it on three formats simultaneously, and you begin to get an idea of the mountain Slightly Mad Studios had set them themselves to climb. Indeed I’m sure many employees probably considered it an app name for the studio as they battled to bring a product of this scale to market.

Project CARS is the first big challenge to the motorsport aspect of gaming since Forza Morotsport, and will no doubt join both that title and Gran Turismo in the coming years as a staple name in racing development. So, with the anticipation at fever pitch, I sit down to play another development build and see how things have improved.

Focusing first on the PS4 Update gameplay, the frame rate is a good place to start. Although improved, it’s not perfect, and there is still that hint of a blur effect throughout, though for the most part improvements have been made, and it’s unfair to give a definitive opinion on this until we review the final copy.

Onto the handling, and great work is always being made: cars handle dynamically and intuitively, while the AI has seen great strides forward.

The preview videos released this week won’t showcase the menu’s or core options – that’s something we’ll focus closely on at release along with the career mode. But we have tried to cover as much as possible in terms of showcasing the ever improving gameplay. 60fps videos will be coming soon too, so you’ll have lots of coverage to look forward to.
