Compared to the PS4 and PC, Project CARS' performance on Xbox One was choppy, to say the least, suffering from frequent frame rate drops. After testing Project CARS 2 on PS4, we were eager to see how the Xbox One version compares.

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry recently put Project CARS 2 to the test on all formats and found the game suffered from regular slowdown on Xbox One. In fairness, Digital Foundry puts games under serious stress tests, so it's not surprising to see the game slow to a crawl when racing with large grids and extreme weather conditions.

As you can see in our Project CARS 2 Xbox One gameplay video showing a range of racing disciplines and circuits, the game's performance is surprisingly stable on Microsoft's less powerful console compared to the original game if you run it with more sensible settings. In dry conditions with 16 cars on the track, Project CARS 2 runs surprisingly smoothly considering the advanced physics and LiveTrack 3.0 dynamic weather conditions the ageing hardware has to cope with.

Unsurprisingly, it's a different story when you introduce wet weather conditions which noticeably affects the frame rate during the initial stages of the race, but improves as the pack spreads out over time. The PS4 Pro version is still currently the best way to experience Project CARS 2 on consoles which is the closest the game gets to running at a solid 60fps, but that will no doubt change when the all-powerful Xbox One X console is released in November.

It will be interesting to pit Project CARS 2 head to head against Forza Motorsport 7 on the new hardware, since the latter will be the flagship game Microsoft will use to show off the power of the Xbox One X.
