Need for Speed has a history of big budget promo videos. 2010's Hot Pursuit started the trend with an intense live action cineamtic chase shot on the twisty Italian Alps, featuring a Zonda Cinque outrunning a Lamborghini Murciélago police car – both of which were custom-made specifically for the project.

Its follow-up, The Run, upped the ante the following year by enlisting Michael Bay to direct an action-packed in-game trailer that packed in all the bombast you would expect from the Transformers director. Rather aptly, the final game had a similar level of substance found in your average Bay film, too: i.e. not much.

For Most Wanted, Criterion has produced another live action promotional video, this time in the form of an elaborate TV advert directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau. After watching this extended version more times than I'm willing to admit, I can safely that it lives up to the precedent set by previous efforts.

It all starts rather sedately, as a cavalcade of cars that you'll be driving in the game become embroiled in a Western-style stand-off-against a line of souped-up police cars.

Without warning, one rogue driver in a Ford Focus ST joins the fury in a gloriously-executed reverse 180, taunting the pigs with a courteous flip of the bird just for good measure. And then, all hell breaks loose – the chase is on.

All in all, a fitting advert for a game that prides itself on fast cars, reckless driving and fleeing from the fuzz, we'd say.

Also, if this is the standard of driving we can expect from the upcoming Need for Speed film adaptation then I have one thing to say to the director: more like this, please.

Get ready to become the Most Wanted when Criterion's latest take on the Need for Speed series screeches into retail November 2nd.
