Game: Forza Horizon 4

Platform: PC, XBox One

Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Release Date: 02/10/2018

The rumours were right: Forza Horizon 4 is set in the UK, rather than Japan. Playground Games’ latest open-world racer will include 450 cars including the mighty McLaren Senna. There will even be dynamically changing seasons like in Project CARS 2. It looks spellbinding in the reveal trailer, and will even run at a silky smooth 60fps on Xbox One X. But then alarm bells started ringing during the announcement.

Playground Games boasted how Forza Horizon 4 will be set in an online persistent world shared with other players roaming the streets. This left many people wondering if the game will require an internet connection like The Crew 2 and recent Need for Speed games, which attracted widespread criticism for being always-online. Fear not, however, because Playground Games’ principal game designer Mike Brown has confirmed Forza Horizon 4 will not be an online-only experience.

“Always online is a problem for people,” he told IGN. “Sometimes you just don’t want to play with other people; sometimes people are just put off by the idea of having to cope with other people.” We couldn’t agree more.

He continued: “It comes with loads of other problems, such as your internet goes down, you can’t play. Our servers go down; you can’t play. So we solved that problem by saying that Forza Horizon 4 will not be an always-online game.” While he admitted Forza Horizon 4 is “much better played with other people,” there will be an option to play the entire game in single player with Drivatars like in Forza Horizon 3.

At least this means we’ll be able to pause the game and use the photo mode.
