Criterion developing Star Wars Battlefront II's space combat mechanics

James Allen On April 18, 2017

The Guildford-based studio Criterion Games is currently developing Star Wars Battlefront II's space combat mechanics.

As stated by Electronic Arts, the former Burnout and Need for Speed developer has built the space combat component of Star Wars Battlefront II "from the ground up" - suggesting substantial improvements over the comparable 'Fighter Squadron' dogfighting mode from the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront reboot.

For example, it's claimed Criterion has endowed the space combat mode with "refined handling, weapons and customisation options". Star Wars Battlefront II will also allow players to pilot "the galaxy's most iconic ships" in locales such as asteroid fields and Imperial dockyards.

It's highly likely Criterion is also responsible for the aerial dogfighting mechanics in Star Wars Battlefront II's more conventional land-based maps. Presumably, there'll also be elements of the game's singleplayer campaign that Criterion will have handled.

Criterion Games has prior experience with developing content for a licensed Star Wars game. On top of crafting the speeder bikes in Electronic Arts' original Star Wars Battlefront, Criterion also created the title's Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission add-on DLC.

Star Wars Battlefront II is an upcoming shooter published by Electronic Arts, and created by DICE in collaboration with Criterion and the recently-launched Montreal-based studio Motive. Set to incorporate content from the core three cinematic Star Wars eras and additional modes over its reboot predecessor, Star Wars Battlefront II will be launched on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 17th November 2017.
