Dukesday News and Blog. - Codemasters Announce "FUEL" |
|
Aug 19, 2008 - 3:14 PM - by VVV Duke
|
Welcome to the first of many weekly Blogs from me, featuring News, Previews and Contests. First up this week is news that Codemasters is working on another driving game to whet VVV's appetite in the form of upcoming title "FUEL" and I dare say they've stolen the VVV logo....
Today Codemasters took the opportunity to announce their brand new racing franchise "FUEL", a "revolutionary" multi-terrain racing game with massive environments is in development. FUEL follows on from it's cousins GRID and DiRT by not only revolving around leaving your rivals in their tracks but also featuring yet another four letter acronym. What next? CARS?
Anyway, the game does look pretty sexy from the little snippets you see in the screenshots and developer video (below) and perhaps the most amazing thing is that it is over 5,000 Square miles in size, all of which is accessible to the player. Meaning no boundaries or invisible walls, just pure unadulterated freedom while driving.
FUEL does come with a back-story, in as much as it is an alternate present where global warming has already destroyed the environment, so what else would you want to do in that situation but drive and do stunts off cliffs? The game revolves around the idea that you race your vehicles against one another in order to win fuel supplies to further your post apocalyptic joy riding due to the fact fuel prices have skyrocketed. Now forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't this sound less like alternate reality and more like Essex on a Friday night?
Bikes and cars of all different shapes and sizes are set to make an appearance in FUEL, which you can pit against 15 others in multiplayer modes, but while trying to defeat one another you're going to have to watch out for the dynamic weather system which ranges from bright summers days to tornadoes. But fear not, you'll be able to escape the weather while exploring the entire game world with your friends, but make sure you've got the headlights on full or you'll be caught out by the realistic day and night cycle the game goes through.
“The technology Asobo Studios has developed to build FUEL is ground-breaking. To create a game on this unprecedented scale to this level of graphical quality, complete with all the dynamic weather effects, is a great achievement,” said Barry Jafrato, Senior Vice President of Brand, Codemasters. “FUEL had to be a special title for Codemasters to include in our racing portfolio and we believe that from both a gameplay and a technical perspective, FUEL compliments our long standing tradition of driving excellence.”
You'll get to experience FUEL in 2009 when it's released for Xbox 360 and PS3 simultaneously.
That's right sports fans, another Caption Contest, except this time there is a prize. A copy of "SBK-08 Superbike World Championship" for Xbox 360. According to the developer's website; "SBK 08 is the official videogame of the Superbike World Championship and it will allow the player to enter the fantastic SBK championship. The game is, in fact, fully licensed and simulates every aspect of this world."
Reply to this post with your best captions for the picture below in order to win the prize, the winner is picked by me alone and will be the person who makes me laugh the hardest. The more unusual the better. Alas being a PAL copy this will only apply to UK and European users but all are welcome to enter and we'll see what else we can knock together.
Caption Contest Ends Tuesday 26th August

Still awaiting the Leipzig Games Convention to get going I've been busy browsing the net in anticipation, looking for any morsels of new details which might interest the community. Of course the bulk of that surrounding racing and this week shots were shown of the new Lotus as it will appear as DLC for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and very tasty it looks too, note the highly detailed dashboard with imperfections. All just contributing to the general polish we can expect from the final title with no expense sparred.
Indeed there have been a range of updates recently and apparently we'll soon see the long awaited introduction of crash damage. Unfortunately Sony's online woes have continued however with many users seemingly unhappy with the patching/upgrading process and as with many titles GT5 hasn't been without its teething problems erasing all of a players settings when a patch is downloaded. It comes as a surprise that the development team in all of their astounding detail have made such simple errors in executing a standard update process. Fans have been making their feelings known so there is no doubt Sony will continue to work on the issue but it does come on the back of a whole raft of delays relating to the quality of the current online experience.

Racing round London and looking very tidy.

Fantastic detail on the interior.
No further info on Race Pro however they did release the box art a couple of weeks ago and I thought post it here, Aston seems to be in vogue at the moment and here we are again featuring a similar feel to the GRID theme rather than the Touring Cars we might have expected? Fingers crossed the game lives up to its potential.
While on the subject of cars I couldn't help but be blown away by this home made Batmobile, yes a guy in America made it happen, you can see more here http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2008/08...e-tumbler.html
Another cool thing I came across this week was the Geometry Wars 2 Gamercard, but what I'd really like to see is a joint leader board system so that we can enter a range of forum users, would make great competition especially on the live arcade titles.
To finish off today I had to laugh when I saw this device, the Wiibrator and it does exactly what it says on the tin. http://www.shinyshiny.tv/2008/07/the...or_d.html#more

Nintendo continuing to expand the female......gaming market.

General Weekly Randomness |
|
Aug 14, 2008 - 2:44 PM - by VVV Mars VG
|
Not a great deal of news this week, indeed most of the big stories are now being held back till the forthcoming Leipzig show in Germany. Lots of big announcements are apparently being stored up with this being seen as the "gamers show" unlike E3 which now appears to represent the "casual gaming show". However the week hasn't been entirely fruitless, on Tuesday I competed in the Eidos Summer Games at Battersea Park in London. Great fun was had with events including Discus (throwing copies of random PS2 titles), the Hammer (throwing a Nintendo GameCube as far as possible), the WiiLay (a relay with a Wii remote) and the Shotputt (with an XBox 1).
The Day got off to a great start with alcoholic beverages being served from 11am followed by the Discus (which I missed) the Hammer, to which my long arms came in handy giving the GC a jolly good hiding and winning the Gold medal. Then the serious business kicked off with the WiiLay, our team managed a great Silver medal but I have to admit I haven't run a competitive 100 meters in years and those last 20 meters hurt but despite the pain I was unable to regain the deficit.
However it proved a solid result and following more alcoholic refreshments it was back onto the playing field for the final round of the day, the Hammer! However I didn't perform too well getting a bad grip the XB which flew out badly leaving me floundering in 7th place, however you can see a couple of throws from the competition here. http://itn.co.uk/news/9909aac43ab8ce...910f7de4b.html
Great fun and a medal result on behalf of VVV! Now I'll have to knuckle down and review the game.
Talking of VVV, you may have noticed some moving around on the forums recently. Unfortunately an Admin did make a mistake which deleted some 9000 posts, unfortunately we were unable to load an old back-up and those posts have been effectively lost. We apologise for the lost posts, these relate to the Motorsport, Football, Dirt, COD and R6V sections. We've also being moving topics around, first making the forum smaller and now looking to new ways to segregate each section with motorsport sections now being reintroduced and the new Team Gaming Speak section. This is great for several reasons meaning other sections are no longer blocked up with irrelevant off topic chat and some of the negative attacks on the team or or its members can now be segregated to a section where the people that care about this stuff can wallow in it. While the rest of us can carry on unaffected talking about our passions, the gaming.
In recreating the driving sections is been a shame to see the demise of the PGR community, indeed the racing community in general is pretty broken up at the moment with no one title truly capturing the imagination, but I would like to get a bit more Gran Turismo chat going. GT is a game with many ups and downs but there's no doubt its always going to be one of the biggest PS3 games out there even if it feels a touch clinical for many of us.
One game that certainly isn't clinical is the recent Ferrari Challenge, since the initial preview I haven't had the chance to give it a full review but recent screen-shots sent in by members of the neogaf forum have proved very impressive. By all accounts it's also growing a nice little fan base on the PS3 who are all eagerly awaiting those all important announcements relating to downloadable content, I expect we'll see more shortly. Several of these screen shots were joined together but as they all look cool I thought we'd go with a front page image overload.

Screen shot = great looking rain effects!

Ah livery editor in action, very nice.
Finally for this week you'll see I've given the paint jobs and photo-mode its own forum, as someone who is utterly useless at the paint system on Forza I can't help but be constantly impressed by the designs created by others, indeed VVV's Lunoc has been getting up to a few recently including this new VVV Zonda design with painted exhaust, both impressive and creative so lets see a few more from the wider community. It doesn't have to be the best ever but its always great fun to see a different approach to design work.

Very nice indeed, I want one!

Creative and inventive, always great seeing these designs expand in their ambition.

In action on the Laguna Seca circuit.

Geometry Wars 2 Review |
|
Aug 05, 2008 - 1:05 PM - by VVV Mars VG
|
No game has been more important to the launch of Xbox Live Arcade than Geometry Wars, that’s bold statement to kick off this review but not many would consider arguing against it. The title demonstrated all of the key facets required in making a simple yet perfectly addictive title while utilizing a range of visual effects supported by the new format. Retro gaming was born again and this gave life to a range of old titles that were renewed giving inspiration to a whole list of new developers and selling older titles to a whole new generation of gamers. Indeed Geometry Wars 2 was such an important XBLA title, it was deemed big enough to warrant a special mention by Microsoft at this years E3 Expo, a long way from it’s origins as an optional arcade title hidden within Project Gotham Racing 2.
Bizarre Creations have since been bought by Activision, this is the first iteration of the series under their new owners and commercial success is virtually assured. For those that have never had the chance to sample its predecessor, Geometry Wars 2 follows the same basic play mechanic, 1 stick to move, 1 stick to shoot. The new introduction (as seen in Waves featured within Project Gotham Racing 4) being that destroyed enemies now drop little green blobs which increase your multiplier and in making this version more accessible, players now don’t loose their multiplier when they loose a life.
So if it moves, shoot it, if it’s still moving, collect it.
From the moment this title boots up it oozes polish, with a style totally in keeping with the new neon look. Enter the single player option and we see the 6 new game modes. Deadline which involves destroying as many enemies as possible within the time limit, King in which the player can only shoot within 3 ever moving circles, the players are safe in the circle of course moving unarmed is another matter entirely. Evolved is the standard mode but with all new enemies it’s an even greater challenge and will test the very best players. Pacifism is as the title would suggest, a mode where the player has no weapons, instead they need to dodge enemies and fly through explosive gates, though failure to fly through the dead centre of the gate will see the player destroyed, Waves as seen in PGR4 and finally Sequence, a set of 20 rooms which must be survived, very similar in its feel to fans of Mutant Storm.
So the package is far more complete and this menu is also more inclusive with your friends, this displaying each mode option containing a mini scoreboard which is fixed to your friends list, this heightens the competition and constant urge to better your local opponents. In-game too the high score related to the next score on your friends list giving achievable targets and this is supported by a range of creative achievements.
The game-play is as before simple and functional with the standard two stick system but this game isn’t perfect. The multiplayer is local only with no online mode present and this is a major blow to the expectations given off from the recent E3 demonstration, it could be argued that the sheer amount of activity on-screen would have slowed the online process down but there is no doubt fans would have forgone the additional effects to enable some form of multiplayer action. Replays via the scoreboard have also failed to make an appearance but the biggest gripe for the more serious players is the unforced errors the game generates from visually overloading the screen. The fact is when Geometry Wars 2 becomes busy it’s almost impossible to see certain enemies causing constant untimely deaths, this most apparent with the orange arrows generating on top of snakes and the purple fans which can often be hidden by large explosions.
Of course Evolved wasn’t without its problems and many of these have been seen to with more balanced weapon system, easier destruction of black holes and more cunning AI, especially in the form of the snakes and green “things”. Enemies spawning on top of the player was also a key issue and thankfully improvements have been made (providing you keep on the move) but the situation is still not ideal and those pesky orange arrows do still have a tendency for head spawning, overall this represented the key aspects of a more refined product.
Experts will argue that these gripes are relatively small if players are willing to learn basic strategies, the most successful being an anti-clockwise orbit of the screen. Combining this with a calm approach, focusing on the direction of travel to clear a path while firing a few volleys behind giving a bit of breathing room where possible. Geometry Wars does take a while to understand as the unique behaviour of the enemies can appear initially random but repeated play will enable opportunities to herd them and land a well timed bomb to pick up a wealth of multipliers.
In the sound department; the original Geometry Wars was somewhat lacking, many would consider that an understatement. Evolved came in with a new thumping track, loved by many it went with the action and stood up to the hours of repeated play. Geometry Wars 2 introduces different music tracks for each mode and includes interactive sound, a feature not often used in real-time gaming but fitting in perfectly to the action. This is demonstrated best within the King and Sequence modes giving yet more examples of the detail and polish Bizarre Creations have gone to in making this a complete product.
Overall Geometry Wars 2 is a better game, not just because of the new modes but the emphasis on fun and novel ways to enjoy an otherwise linear experience. It’s failing in the lack of online multiplayer is an inescapable disappointment and for the expert players the over the top explosions may make achieving top scores a frustrating experience far too dependent on luck. But for the average player Geometry Wars 2 is an unmissable title and for 800 MS points it really deserves a place in everyone’s XBLA collections.

Battlefield Update and Geometry Wars Secret! |
|
Aug 05, 2008 - 1:24 AM - by VVV Duke
|
Battlefield Bad Company; is receiving it's long awaited and badly needed conquest pack update on the 7th of August, for many of us fans here and most of the players it will definitely be a welcome addition to our download queues.
Hopefully it addresses the problems with the release version, lag being the main enemy everyone wishes they could blow up, but also other faulty parts of the game still dragging the awesome shooter down. Video below!
Geometry Wars 2; In other news and on another battlefront, your space adventures in Geometry Wars 2 could take an interesting turn, quite literally. Apparently if you press the Right Bumper and the Back button you get a different camera option;
(Control this by using the Right Stick to move, the Left to rotate the camera)
Unfortunately this is only available while the game is paused, but you can have a completely 360 degree view of the arena. Sigh, such a shame you can't play with it like this!
However, some good news for Bizarre Creations/Activision and us gamers, GW2 has posted the highest three-day sales figures yet for an Xbox Live Arcade game which means that obviously they're going to cash in with a third installment at some point, it's a win win!
